Ice Fishing 2006

Yeah I know, dropping a live minnow down a hole is about as far from Fly Fishing as it gets! In my defense...Dropping a single barbless artificial, poured-lead-bead-head, tube style, rubber fly on tippet sized line is kinda like fly fishing. And besides its MY website. LOL. I got lots on the tiny glow jigs. There aren't any bait pictures here. Enjoy!

We had losts of fun on the ice this year with many 50+ fish days, not even counting panfish. Some Big Pike and HUGE Crappies filled most days but the most notable fishes for my 2006 Ice Fishing Season were the 6 Largemouth Bass that I caught through the ice! Shown here is the first one at 15".

All the bass fought the same, running in wide circles around the hole. So I kinda knew the species to expect.

The size shocked me. And I was mighty glad I had swithed to 4 lb. test.

4lb.+ Largemouth !!!

18 inches plus and 4lbs. or more on 4lb. test. From late Feb. on this hawg would endure 10 months to hold the title - Biggest Largemouth of the year!

Greedy, greedy Bass

One of the few days in a hut. I was taking a bit of a break and had set down my jigging rod at the second hole. This bass took the tiny tube jig so lightly I didn't even see the noodle rod move at all. I noticed the line slack up slightly and move slowly towards me and the other hole. I reached to set the hook, expecting a perch or sunny. As I grabbed the noodle rod, the bait rod dipped violently to the surface. DOUBLE HEADER !!! Nope, same fish, greedy bass-hole took both baits. I fought him mostly with the bait rod and 15lb. so no real challenge, but this fish was landed twice in two holes! My favorite story from Winter 2006. Also turns out to be my favorite picture of the ice season!

We decided to stop near shore and make a few more holes before finally calling it a day. I fear no darkness with my SUPER GLOW Jigs. Shown here is my biggest Pike ever on 2lb. At 30 inches, still one of my biggest period!

30 inch Pike on 2lb.

I love my noodle rod! 1/32.oz. Super Glow Blue Jig with Glow Tube!

Best grip to release

Fish Guy shows how to best hold a Pike, so you can control and release, with minimal harm to the fish. Grab the folds of skin under the chin, not the gills.

We caught some cool little pike too! What fun on the noodle rod and the light light. Some of the little guys out fought Crappies of similar length, double the weight.   Click the Pic. below for full sized !!!

We got some big slabs too! The Glow Tubes were real good to me this year!

This Slab goes 12 inches. We got even BIGGER than that!

See the next gallery!

Weird light today!

A 10 incher and a cool picture in weird light!

Way back when I still thought 10 inches was picture-worthy.
