Pike on the fly rod!
This fish fought great and was my biggest on the fly at 24" for a while. I was looking for trout that day. I hooked and lost the only one in the pool on my 3rd or 4th cast. Then they came. I went 9/13 on the pike that day. This fish was one of the first pike I ever caught on purpose. What fun. I can't wait to get back to that river!
All the pike were gently released, even the one that ripped me open. They were released UNTOUCHED whenever possible!
Ive learned with the pike you take the picture of the fly FIRST ! They get beat up bad. Two or three fish and it's un-useable. Or sooner if something big enough to inhale the fly comes along.
Even with the braided leaders, it's the same story every time. A couple head shakes, then nothin'. Nice clean cut.
100's of razor sharp teeth are tough to beat! Gunna try wire next. I don't think it will cast well. I'll keep you posted.
A chunky one! What fun.
I quickly got desperate for big enough flies to chuck at the toothy critters. I was well equiped to match the hatch but the obligatory beadhead and muddler in my vest soon fell prey to a larger pike.
Since nobody was looking, I pulled out the Crappy Tire bucktail streamer. It got me this one and the next one. Pretty good for a fly I'd never pull out in front of my freinds.
They got bigger as the day went on!
My best ever on the Fly rod. Typical Northern Pike.
Pike fishing can be dangerous!
