If you have to handle any SMALL trout, try not to grip it's entire body, wet hand or not. Try to unhook it in shallow water. Even an inch or 2 of water will cushion the fish if it flops around a bit.
DO NOT lift a sizable trout by the lip. Support the weight of the fish with your other hand. They are not like Bass. They are much more delicate !
The best way is to release the fish UNTOUCHED whenever possible. Use barbless even when not required by law.
Use your forceps to remove the hook while the fish is still in the water and it is still breathing !

All are part of Nature! Please be especially delicate with all Trout. Release them untouched whenever possible. Wet your hands before touching any fish, avoid netting and release imediately. The brookies are the last of the last in Southern Ontario. Once they're gone, it's all over.
